Great care was taken to pour footings around any tree roots, requiring a customized beam system. Dimensions are roughly 9’x16’, Egress: One 8’ and one 4’ barndoor. Materials: reinforced concrete piers,&nbsp; pressure treated lumber, polycarbonate, galvanized corrugated steel, reclaimed lumber from older shed and the main property, a brick rowhouse built in 1889. https://hiarry.work/Pond-Steps Pond Steps Over the Summer of 2019, 54 steps were cut at an average 35 degree slope, rising a total of about 25 feet. Using pressure treated 6”6” railroad ties. Because the site is within an “Area of Critical Environmental Concern,” care was taken to reroute ground roots instead of cutting through them, and knotches were carved into the wood where obstacles made it necessary. Based off of the geometry of an icosahedron, each face is adorned with a pyramid, and then a sphere is subtracted from each point, revealing an interior space and allowing a transparency. It was installed at my mother's house in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. &nbsp;The Isle de Jean Charles is home to members of the Biloxi-Choctaw-Chitimacha Tribe, many of whose ancestors came to the island escaping the Trail of Tears.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Over the past 80 years, it has lost over 95% of its land mass, and is estimated to be underwater by the end of the century.&nbsp; &nbsp; A vast Levee and floodgate system has been developed over the past few centuries by the Army Corps of Engineers in an effort to fix the river in its place. This Levee system has led to both subsidence and flooding issues, preventing sediment from being deposited to the outer gulf, which would normally counteract erosional forces. Isle De Jean-Charles lies outside of the levee system.&nbsp;Canals dug by oil companies have further broken up the marsh, allowing salt water to penetrate its interior. &nbsp; &nbsp; The State Government, with support from a federal grant, is relocating the remaining 50 members of the Biloxi-Choctaw-Chitimacha Tribe 200 miles North to a farmland.The cost of resettlement is $48 million. Their way of life will change.&nbsp; &nbsp; Because of the high expense, climate refugees will relocate individually, scattering to the wind. Can the act of occupying this area provide storm protection for the coast, and regenerate marshland? By using Recycled oil drums for buyoncy, a bamboo mesh network is generated on a framework of Gabion cages. This Mesh acts as a lattice framework to regenerate the marsh, and restore the natural filtration system of the coast. The triangulated dock system allows the structure to move flexibly with the ocean tide. As a result, their history is largely invisible as well. Later, enslaved African Americans sought refuge in the swamp, and permanent Maroon communities existed outside of the Capitalist Enslaved Mode of Production, until the after the civil war. Each Maroon settlement might have specialized in certain skills and crafts, and an informal trade network likely existed to mutually benefit all communities. <img width="5100" height="3300" width_o="5100" height_o="3300" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/91beb9f25e4f91a578523466a9bd84b9db33728e677728dd38041b2dfb36a0dc/dismalSwampTopoISO_v02.png" data-mid="234670330" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/91beb9f25e4f91a578523466a9bd84b9db33728e677728dd38041b2dfb36a0dc/dismalSwampTopoISO_v02.png" /> Colonial projects sought to extract value from the landscape, and miles of deep and wide canals were dug by enslaved workers to facilitate passage through the swamp. Although failing to fully drain the swamp, these canals destroyed the informal trade routes, and drastically reduced the swamp region. They were successful because they accurately critiqued the racialized capitalistic world within which they were imbedded prior to their occupation of the Dismal Swamp. Few among us, past and present, can make such a claim and generate the evidence to support it.” -Daniel Sayer The raised Scarps to the East and North are ancient coastlines of the Atlantic Ocean. After the Ocean receded, it left a lower plateau of clay silt, which caused the water to drain across from east to west, instead of permeated through the ground. Eventually, fauna took over the saturated area, and began to layer organic material, creating up to 40 ft of Peat Moss. This nutrient rich soil allowed for a robust Cedar forest to prosper. Once the canals were dug, lumber was extracted and produced into sellable goods, such as shingles and barrel knaves. An enslaved worker might have brought the Marroon supplies such as tools, nails. This project re-imaginines the National Opera House as an instrument that resonates out from and into the landscape.Beyond restoring the ornate Victorian exterior, we seek to transform the interior space into a resonating chamber that creates community, and celebrates the legacy of Black music in America. <img width="10800" height="3600" width_o="10800" height_o="3600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0344e69a23b609629ce43a9e67e84164ff1e83afb2ad114fac5b201fe0a72a42/section-01.png" data-mid="234694967" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0344e69a23b609629ce43a9e67e84164ff1e83afb2ad114fac5b201fe0a72a42/section-01.png" /> The National Opera House has a rich history of Black artists and athletes who stayed there throughout the thirties and forties at a time when Jim Crow Laws forbid them elsewhere. Woogie Harris, a local African American entrepeneur bought the property in the early thirties. He allowed Mary Cardwell Dawson, an African American Opera Singer to use the facility as both a music school and her head quarters for her National Negro Opera Company. Woogie’s brother, Teenie Harris, was a wonderful photographer who took photos of the opera productions, both on stage and backstage.He also photographed live music, and did portraits for his community from the early 40’s through the 1970’s. At time of rigid gender norms, Teenie Harris captured people that we might consider to be trans or non binary, challenging our mainstream conception of this time period. After a few years, The National Opera Company chose a black authored opera, “The Ordering of Moses,” Written by Robert Nathaniel Dett.. The score is powerful, and you can hear influences from jazz, gospel infusing with the European style of opera. This opera to me represents the mutability of music, which is constantly being changed and altered as it passes between cultures. Music can thrive in the liminal space between two cultures.
