In his essay “Collective Form,” Fumihiko Maki describes group form as “evolving from a system of generative elements in space.” There is a consistent use of basic materials and construction methods, with minor variations.Within a group form, an organic development of these basic elements creates both positive and negative space. The exterior walls of the base units are extruded from the tessellation pattern, and then sliced at various angles. Generally, a low slice creates a point of entry, and a high slice allows light penetration. These slices reveal the interior space, which is curvilinear and organic. The Group Form Archive is aggregated symmetrically to emphasize the tessellating logic. The 15th Space of Exception is the central open area of three circular connected spaces, contained by undulating walls. The base units can aggregate vertically. Skylights often double as an entry point to the next floor, which are accessed by either a ramp or stairway. The Fourteen Space Archive has a subterranean level, a ground floor, and a second floor that opens out to the rooves of certain units.
